BY NANCY GAGNET | MIRROR REPORTER — Nothing says love quite like a chocolate-covered strawberry – especially on Valentine’s Day. Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy in uptown Maumee will serve up thousands of them for those looking to satisfy their sweetie’s sweet tooth on the day that honors love. “Valentine’s Day and the day before Valentine’s Day are two of the busiest days of the year for us,” said Jason Peters, who owns the business with Jason Sieminski. Shoppers will begin flocking to the store this weekend, and chocolate-covered strawberries often top the list as their go-to favorite. Pre-orders are also accepted. “At least one person if not two will be dipping strawberries all day,” Peters said. “But don’t worry, we won’t run out.” Plenty of other confectionary creations will also be offered to make Valentine’s Day sweeter, including personalized chocolate candy bars, handmade turtles, sea salt caramels, toasted coconut, truffles and buckeyes. Bacon lovers might enjoy heart-shaped chocolate-covered bacon or wild flavor bacon soda, and those with an unusual affinity for chocolate might enjoy chocolate-covered potato chips, Bugles, Fritos, Nutter Butters, Oreos, pretzels, peanuts and espresso beans. A large selection of retro candy is also on hand, including pop rocks and mega buttons, and giant-sized candy is featured, including a 5-pound gummy bear. Candy from Canada, England and Germany is also available. The store is also stocked with sugar-free chocolates and candy, specialty popcorn and a large selection of nuts. Nostalgic tin signs are featured as well as retro and specialty drinks, which can be purchased in make-your-own four-packs. “We’ve really expanded our choice of specialty sodas,” Peters said. Favorite flavors include Dad’s Blue Cream Soda, Grape Nehi, Squirt and New York Seltzer. There are also new and unusual flavors including salted caramel root beer and ranch dressing soda. Boxes of hand-dipped chocolates can be purchased in ready-made boxes or you can create your own selection. “When you create your own box, you get exactly what you want,” Peters said. “Even if you come in at the last minute, it looks like you put a lot of thought into it and you don’t get a box full of stuff you don’t like. If someone likes dark chocolate, we can fill it with dark chocolate or just milk chocolate.” The made-to-order boxes can be put together on the spot and all purchases can be placed in a gift bag for easy gift giving. In addition, the store also sells gift cards, making it a one-shop stop for any special occasion. Fruit bouquet arrangements can also be created and delivered and the store features party and event catering services. Peters and Sieminski purchased the business four years ago and say their location in uptown Maumee is ideal. They also both agree that working in a candy shop is a job like no other. “Everybody who comes in here is in a good mood,” Sieminski said. “It’s especially fun to watch when families come in with little kids. Those kids know right where to go.” • Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy is located at 101 E. Wayne St. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The store will have extended hours on Tuesday, February 14.
