Springfield Middle School Boys Basketball Teams Sweep Arbor Hills
BY ANDREW ROWER — MIRROR SPORTS
Springfield’s boys basketball team improved to 14-0 (31-0 including its seventh-grade season) last Thursday after defeating Arbor Hills on the road, 39-24.
It appeared as if it was going to be yet another Blue Devils blowout early on as Springfield jumped out to an 11-2 lead on first-quarter baskets by guards Trent Bond and Josh Ryan and forwards Robert Boykin, Logan Gorey and Scott Seymour.
The Roadrunners came back to score eight of the first nine points of the second, however, pushing the score to 12-10 on buckets from Aerin West and James Hanley.
The Blue Devils inched their lead back up to three points by halftime and then started the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers by Boykin and guard Aaron Thompson, a nice play from Bond to Gorey and a Ja’Vonte Tate drive.
Now trailing 26-14, the Arbor Hills duo of Harrison Riggs and Austin Rogers brought the Roadrunners back within eight points by the end of the third, but that was as close as they got.
Springfield instantly opened its advantage to 13 on early fourth-quarter baskets by Gorey, Tate and Thompson and slowly increased it to 15 by the final buzzer on additional buckets from Seymour, Tate and guard Keith McClure.
The Devils ended up out-rebounding Arbor Hills 25-17, and committed six fewer turnovers at 13.
Gorey (eight rebounds, three steals) and Boykin paced Springfield with seven points apiece, Seymour (four rebounds), Tate (four rebounds) and Thompson (three assists) each scored five more, Bond chipped in four points and four boards and McClure and Ryan finished with three points each.
Wyatt Brown and Austin Rhonehouse contributed another three rebounds to the Blue Devils victory.
Despite the loss, Hanley led all scorers in the game with eight points and also pulled down a pair of rebounds.
West totaled another six points, seven boards and three assists and Sam Stout ended up with four points, two rebounds and two steals.
Seventh Grade
Despite trailing by 13 points at the end of the third quarter, Springfield’s seventh-grade team came back to record its fourth win of the season with a 41-36 victory over Arbor Hills.
The Blue Devils scored eight of the first 10 points of the fourth on baskets by guards Brad Ammons, Michael Downton and Bryant Koback, cutting the Roadrunners lead down to seven points with 3:50 left in the contest.
Arbor Hills extended its advantage back to 10 points on answers from Will Woodall and Garrett McCoy, but Springfield refused to give up.
Instead, the Blue Devils mounted an incredible comeback by closing things out with a 15-point unanswered run over 3:14.
The spurt included clutch buckets by Ammons, Downton, Koback and guards Alvarez Hampton-Bey and Jacob Vanderham.
Woodall, Josh Joseph, Antwaan Lawson and Earon Moore gave the Roadrunners an early 10-9 lead over Springfield’s Ammons, Vanderham and guard Dale Lorenzen, but things didn’t stay close for long.
Additional buckets by Lawson, Moore and Woodall gave Arbor Hills a 20-13 lead by halftime, before the Roadrunners appeared to have put the Blue Devils away by outscoring them 11-5 in the third.
Arbor Hills outrebounded Springfield 39-32 but committed a glaring 11 more turnovers at 31.
Koback paced the Blue Devils with a solid overall game of 12 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and three assists.
Vanderham added nine points, six boards and two steals, Ammons totaled seven points, five rebounds and three assists and both Downton (seven rebounds, five steals, four assists, three blocked shots) and Lorenzen scored four points as well.
The comeback win saw another five points, seven boards and two steals from the combination of Hampton-Bey, Chase Brown, Amareon Harrison, Ronnell Peterson and Travis Ryan.
Despite the loss, Moore led all scorers in the game with 15 points and also recorded four steals and three rebounds.
