John Doherty
John J. Doherty, age 90, formerly of Maumee, passed away on Monday, August 29.
Born to Edward and Ellen Doherty on November 28, 1920, in New York City, where he was raised, he served his country in the U.S. Army’s 338th Division in Italy during World War II. Mr. Doherty was employed as a pricing manager for Bunting Brass and Bronze for more than over 40 years, retiring in 1971. A charter member of the Maumee VFW Post, he loved attending his Army reunions. He was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and enjoyed bowling, golf and the New York Yankees. He and his wife of 62 years, Helen, who passed away on March 25, 2008, enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Doherty is survived by his son, Kevin (Vicki) Doherty; daughters, Karen (Roger) Warnock and Patricia (John) Valerius; grandchildren, Kyle and Evan Doherty, Brie and Devin Warnock, Ryan (Lindsay) and Crystal Jenkins and Courtney Thorn; great-grandchildren, Austin Click and Elijah Harvath; nephew, Michael Doherty; and niece, Kathleen Doherty. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Doherty.
Family and friends were received on September 1 in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home in Maumee, where funeral services began on September 2, followed by the funeral mass in St. Joan of Arc Church. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Maumee. The family requests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or Honor Flight.
George Schoonmaker III
George (Bud, Schoonie) Schoonmaker III, age 66, of Little Otter Lake, in Fremont, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, August 30.
Born in Toledo on January 11, 1945, to Gus and Mildred Schoonmaker, he was a proud 1962 graduate of DeVilbiss High School, where he participated in football, track and basketball. He attended Montana State University on a football scholarship and learned about “Montana Toughness.” Mr. Schoonmaker earned a master’s degree in education from The University of Toledo in 1979. Teaching at Anthony Wayne High School from 1967 until his retirement in 1998, he was named the NLL Football Coach of the Year in 1976. He also coached football at Macomber (1979-84) and Clay (1985) before returning to Anthony Wayne in 1986.
After his retirement from Anthony Wayne Schools, Mr. Schoonmaker moved to Little Otter Lake, where he coached football for four years at Tri-State (Trine) University. It was also during his retirement that he fulfilled his finest dream of all, becoming a grandpa to seven grandchildren. He asked his wife of nine years, Kathy, to marry him again, so on August 22, they renewed their wedding vows, pledging their love into eternity.
Surviving are his “bride,” Kathleen (Carter) Schoonmaker; brother, Randy (Sharon) Schoonmaker; niece, Angie MacDonald; and aunts, Lois (Sally) Lowe, Sue Schoonmaker and Andrea Beguhn.
Visitation and a memorial service took place on September 2 at Farnham Funeral Home in Temperance, Mich.
Mary Mercer
Mary Virginia “Ginny” Mercer, age 87, of Whitehouse and formerly of Maumee, died on Tuesday, August 30, with her family by her side.
Born in Salem, Va., on October 30, 1923, to John and Cathryn (Harr) Critselous, she graduated in 1942 from Blountville (Tennessee) High School, where she was an outstanding basketball player. While visiting Toledo with her older sister, Irene, she met her future husband, Paul Mercer, whom she married on January 21, 1946, in Blountville. Upon moving to Toledo, Mrs. Mercer worked for Toledo Trust, Ohio Bell and Toledo Public Schools, from which she retired in the mid-80s. She also spent many summers working on Put-in-Bay at a variety shop. After retirement, she developed an interest in antiques and dolls and started a business known as Ginny’s Dolls and Antiques, even learning how to repair old dolls.
Many years were spent working at Mill Race Antique Store in Waterville, going into business at a shop known as Seconds on Third and doing many antique and doll shows. Mrs. Mercer had the privilege of being contacted by Sauder Village and helping organize and begin an annual Doll and Teddy Bear Show. She recently attended the show and had an opportunity to see old friends. Throughout life, she had many travel experiences with her friend, Donald Sugg, of Deland, Fla., including trips to Alaska, Mexico, Guatemala, Antiqua and many parts of the USA. She was an active member of Hope United Methodist Church in Whitehouse, Friendly Center and the Toledo-Glass City Doll Collectors Club.
Mrs. Mercer is survived by her daughter, Melinda (Robert) Grant, of Whitehouse; grandson, Ryan Grant; sister, Barbara Lamm; niece, Amy (Gregg) Larson; nephews, Michael Allen and John Lamm; great-nieces, Brenna and Indira Larson; and many special friends too numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Mercer; parents, John and Cathryn Critselous; sister, Irene Allen; and nephew, Frank Lamm.
Friends were received on September 5 at Peinert Funeral Home in Waterville Funeral services took place on September 6 at Hope United Methodist Church in Whitehouse. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Hope United Methodist Church.
Carlisle Tillman
Carlisle E Tillman, age 91, of Whitehouse, passed away on August 30, with his children at his side.
A World War II veteran, he loved to golf, bowl and fish. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Tillman, and is survived by his sons, Timothy (Jackie), Terry (Loretta), David (Mary) and Jeffery Tillman; daughters, Pam (Tim) Adams and Sandy (Joe) Barrera; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services were private. The family requests memorial donations to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Doris Collard
Doris B. Collard, age 77, of Holland, passed away on Friday, September 2.
Born in Wadi, Ky., on July 27, 1934, she was an aerial photographer for most of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Left behind to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Terry; son, Dan (Karen) Collard; and grandchildren, Tim and Diane.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services and burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Rex Keener
Rex C. Keener, age 81 of Holland, passed away on Friday, September 2, after a brief illness.
Born on January 30, 1930, in Fairmont, W.Va., to Rex and Dorothy (Moore) Keener, he graduated from Charleston High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Charleston West Virginia (Morris Harvey College) and a master’s degree in liberal arts and Doctorate of Jurisprudence from The University of Toledo. He also studied advanced business at Dartmouth College. Mr. Keener served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant during the Korean Conflict at Ft. Dix, N.J., in the Signal Corp. He worked for Owens-Illinois as a credit manager for 36 years and then began a second career as a vice president of commercial lending for Fifth Third Bank, retiring in 1996.
Mr. Keener had many interests, including being Past Master of Barton Smith Lodge 613 (Triad Lodge) and the Lucas County Memorial Lodge, and was a former member of the Zenobia Shrine and the Jesters Unit. He also served as a deacon, elder and clerk of session for First Presbyterian Church of Maumee. He loved playing golf at Valleywood Golf Club and Heather Downs Country Club. With a passion for classical music, he was a 51-year season ticket holder of the Toledo Symphony. After retirement, he volunteered as a tutor for the Ohio Reads program. He loved college basketball, was an avid Duke University fan, loved Pontiac convertibles and collected a variety of clowns.
Preceded in death by his daughters, Gretchen, Christine and Stephanie Keener; and brother, Gary Keener, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet (Grose) Keener, whom he married on August 19, 1955; son, Eric (Elizabeth) Keener, of Cincinnati; brother, Richard (Sally) Keener; sister, Joyce (Tom) Edmundson; and grandchildren, Cooper, Myles and Paige Keener.
The family received friends at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home on September 5. A memorial service took place on September 6 at the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee. Mr. Keener donated his body to the Neuroscience Department of UTMC. Miriam Querry
Miriam E. Querry age 96, of Maumee, passed away on Monday, September 5. Mrs. Querry was born in Bluffton, Ind., on February 23, 1915 to Levi and Helen (Hettesheimer) Linn.
Mrs. Querry was employed at Haughton Elevator and retired from Owens-Illinois. She was a member of Kappa Tau Beta Sorority and Zion Methodist Church, Toledo. She was a happy, independent woman who enjoyed life. Mrs. Querry loved to play bingo at the Maumee Senior Center and bowled until she was in her 90s. She also loved to bake and was known as the “Cookie Grandma.”
She was married to the love of her life, William J. Querry, who died in 1964. She raised two children, Carol Querry, of Park City, Utah, and James (Janet) Querry, of Maumee. Also surviving is her grandson, Bill, of Portland, Maine; three step-grandchildren, Brian, Laura and Diana; and brother, Max (Jane) Linn of Delta, Ohio. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lucille, and brother, Dale.
Friends and family will be received at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home in Maumee on Thursday, September 8 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Swan Creek Cemetery in Monclova. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
