Katherine Sanders
Katherine L. “Katie” Sanders, of Waterville and formerly of Toledo, Delta and Wauseon, passed away on Thursday, August 5.
Born in Tiffin on October 6, 1924, at the family home to Ernest and Hulda (Weinig) Hasemeyer, she graduated from Columbia High School in 1942 and as a registered nurse from the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She worked at the former Riverside Hospital and The Toledo Hospital and finished her nursing career working in doctors’ offices, retiring in 1986. She married John Sanders on November 15, 1947, in Tiffin, and they raised their family in south Toledo. Mrs. Sanders’ volunteer work included the Toledo Zoo, Friendly Center, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society Discovery Shop and the Fulton County Health Center. She was a member of Triune Chapter No. 344 O.E.S. and the Toledo Hospital Alumni Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Sylvia Ward, Mary Ellen Crawford and Lucy Ann Wilkins; and sons, Kenneth and Barry. Surviving are her son, Lee (Deborah), of Delta; grandsons, Nathan and Shawn (Kristen); step great-grandson, Lukin Kujawa; brother, Ernest (Patricia) Hasemeyer; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21 at Walter Funeral Home, where a memorial service will take place at 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Browning Masonic Community, the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Christ United Methodist Church in Wauseon, Ohio.
Earl Loeffler
Rev. Earl A. Loeffler, age 83, of Toledo, died on Monday, August 9.
Born in Jackson, Mich., on October 3, 1926, to Earl and Bernadine (Dey) Loeffler, he was a 1944 graduate of Central Catholic High School, entered St. Meinrad Seminary in 1944 and graduated in 1947. He entered St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario in 1947 and was ordained a priest on May 19, 1951 at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. Father Loeffler was assigned to St. Joseph Parish in Fremont, where he served from 1951-67. He also served at St. Joseph Parish in Blakeslee, Ohio, Sacred Heart Parish in Montpelier, Saints Peter & Paul Parish in Sandusky, and as the first vicar for Clergy of the Diocese of Toledo.
In 1980, Father Loeffler was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Fremont and canonical pastor at Mother of Sorrows Parish in Put-in-Bay, where he served until his retirement in 1991. He also served as the dean of the Sandusky and Fremont Deaneries, chaplain of the Christian Family Movement and was a member of the Priests’ Retirement Fund Board. After retirement, he ministered to inmates at the federal prison in Milan, Mich., where he initiated the Cursillo movement with the inmates.
Father Loeffler is survived by his brother, Dr. Richard Loeffler; sisters, Jeanne Byron, Phyllis Lacure and Bernadine “Bebe” Eckles (Waterville); 29 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Reception of the Body and Vespers took place on August 15 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Fremont, followed by visitation that evening and on August 16 until the funeral Mass at Corpus Christi University Parish in Toledo. The celebrant for the Mass was Bishop Leonard Blair. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Hoffman Catholic School, Sacred Heart Campus, in Fremont, or St. Joseph Central Catholic High School in Fremont.
Robert Logan
Robert E. Logan, age 86, of Maumee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 10.
Born in Cleveland on July 24, 1924, to Ernest and Anna (Vlasak) Logan, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a carpenter for 15 years at St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center, retiring in 1987. Mr. Logan was an avid fan of the Toledo Mud Hens and enjoyed gardening and carpentry. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Mary Jane; daughters, Deborah (William) Blanar, Kathy (John) Bradbury and Sandra (Chip) Sulier; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one great-grandson on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends were received on August 12 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home in Maumee, where funeral services took place on August 13. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Maumee. Memorial contribution may be made to St. Joseph Church, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee, OH 43537.
Ellen Wallace
Ellen A. Sautter Wallace, age 95, died on Wednesday, August 11.
Born in Ann Arbor, Mich., on June 2, 1915, to Roland and Pearl Boyne, she is survived by her children, Charles (Audre) Sautter, of Excelsior, Minn., Sue (Joe) Conklin, of Holland, Christiania (Ron) Nietz, of Bowling Green, John (Linda) Sautter, of Brighton, Mich., and Patricia (Ken) Giese, of Leominster, Mass.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; husband, Rufus Wallace, of Northwood; eight stepchildren; 11 step grandchildren; and 15 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Sautter; grandson, Tim Conklin; and brother, Harold Boyne.
Visitation and services took place on August 14 at the Holland Free Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Cherry Street Mission or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Dorothy Adams
Dorothy Jean Adams, age 89, of Holland, died on Friday, August 13.
Born in Camden, Ark., on June 17, 1921, to Elmer and Blanche (Rucks) Anderson, she married Heyward Adams and together they were Southern Baptist missionaries to Nigeria. She later worked as a junior high school math teacher in Camden.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her son, Dean (Marilyn) Adams; and sister, Margaret Hitchcock. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Heyward; and brother, Edmond Anderson.
Funeral services and burial will be conducted this week in Richmond, Va. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Heartland Hospice.
Lyman Elliott
Lyman Fred Elliott, age 82, of Toledo, died on Saturday, August 14.
Born near Waterville on June 2, 1928, to Benton and Helen (Fischer) Elliott, he married Mary Agnes Carr in Toledo on August 8, 1964. Mr. Elliott enlisted in June 1946 after graduating from high school and was assigned to Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s Honor Guard at the American Embassy, which was MacArthur’s home during the occupation of Japan from 1946-47. He joined the Toledo Police Department in 1958 as a patrolman and retired in 1984. Mr. Elliott’s memberships included the Fraternal Order of Police No. 40, Toledo Police Retirees, Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association, Police Post 512, the American Legion, Gen. MacArthur Honor Guard Association, Paragon Lodge 0788, Free and Accepted Masons, National Rifle Association, Antique Automobile Club of America and Western Lake Erie Model-A Restorers Club.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his son, Timothy (Melinda) Elliott; daughter, Karen (Kenneth) Andres; loving companion, Janet Marie Lee; sisters, Rosalyn Koss and Carol Burton; brother, William Rehm; and grandchildren, Benton, Adam, Ashley, Elliott, Olivia, Emily, Madeline and Ian Andres. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Mary; parents; and brother, Howard Elliott.
Friends and family were received on August 17 at Peinert Funeral Home in Waterville, where funeral services took place on August 18. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memory Gardens. Memorial donations are encouraged to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
