Anthony Wayne Readers Share Blessings Of The Year
As 2011 comes to an end, Mirror readers from the Anthony Wayne area shared the year’s successes and blessings.

Waterville Woman, Son Thankful for Support
My son Chet and I would like to sincerely thank all of the family and friends who so unselfishly gave of their time and support during the loss of Terry – my husband and Chet’s father – in July.
We wish to thank Zion Lutheran Church, Waterville Community Church and the employees, spouses and retirees from the Waterville Public Works Department, Waterville Fire Department, city of Waterville and Waterville Police.
We also thank Ann and Bill Cherry, John and Lee Ann Gouttiere, Randy and Beth Sikorski, Mary Beth and Bob DeMatteo and of course our family, for all of their help the day of Terry’s funeral. I apologize for any names I may have missed.
Terry and I always said he may not have been blessed with the best of health but we were certainly blessed with family and friends. This is the reason we choose to call Waterville our home. I don’t know of any other place with such gracious, caring people. Thank you again to all who contributed in one way or another to make a difficult time more bearable.

Monclova Community Helps Center, Foundation
While the year was one of belt tightening, the Monclova Historical Foundation and Monclova Community Center received a gift from a local foundation to help create a historical museum and gift shop on the main floor.
Residents have also provided financial support and volunteered their time. The economy has been difficult, but the Monclova community is generous and continues to give its time, talent and treasures for the betterment of the community. I am truly grateful to live among such generous people.

Scouts Earn Honors For Helping Others
I am so pleased to know five high school students in Monclova who have earned the highest recognition that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can bestow.
Matthew Hoenig, a junior at Anthony Wayne High School, earned his Eagle Scout designation. Anthony Wayne senior Alisha Sangal, Notre Dame senior Alex Wiley, and AW juniors Kerri Ohns and Sheena Sangal earned their Girl Scout Gold Awards in December.
The Eagle and Gold awards are presented to scouts who find a need within their community and work to fulfill the need and provide a sustainable result. These five students have worked for many months to achieve these goals. I am proud of each of them and hope that they will be role models for others.

Diners Thankful For Weekly Hope Luncheon
Every Wednesday, a team of volunteers gathers to cook, assemble and serve a meal for 200 at Hope United Methodist Church.
What started a few years ago with 25 attendees has grown to attract 180 to 200 diners each week.
Guests enjoy home-cooked meals and desserts, but mostly having a chance to socialize with others in the community.
Free-will donations cover the costs and volunteers donate their time.
Laurie Schofield and all the volunteers do so much to welcome friends in the community.

Man Provides Valuable Example
Tom Nolan is a wonderful friend to my son Tyler. Tom is a true example of a Christian who puts others before himself. He is a blessing to our family.

Family Celebrates Hunter’s First Deer
This year we saw a great harvest in my household with my first-ever deer – a 10-point whitetail! My three older children were able to experience this awesome accomplishment as I explained the tradition and purpose of hunting.

Waterville Library Celebrates 85 Years
Waterville Branch Library celebrated its 85th anniversary in April during National Library Week with a program commemorating the history of Waterville and the library’s place in the community – a wonderful milestone for a well-used service.
The Friends of the Library sponsored the first Music in the Park event for summer 2011 on June 26, featuring the Glass City Dixieland Band. A large crowd enjoyed the music and a mini-book sale during the evening.
We also had impressive increases in our Summer Reading Club participation from all ages. Adult readers were up over 100 percent, and juvenile and teen participation was up as well.

Monclova Supports Community Center
This year has been an interesting one for the Monclova Community Center. While we had to make some cutbacks in staffing, we have been blessed by support from the residents of Monclova Township, through the volunteering of time and through monetary donations.
We are excited about celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the old Monclova School in 2012, and are already meeting with alumni and community members to make 2012 the best year ever!

AW FFA Group Helps Community
This year, Anthony Wayne FFA members purchased gifts for a 9-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl for Monclova Community Center’s Angel Tree. This is just one of several initiatives that followed 10 students’ trip to the national FFA convention.
The teens held a food drive for the Whitehouse food pantry, began an anti-bullying initiative, began plans for a fourth-grade agriculture day at Monclova Primary School and assisted with setting up Children’s Wonderland in Sylvania.
After realizing the need for warm clothing and blankets at the Cherry Street Mission, FFA members began “Coats for the Cold.” Coats, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and boots will be collected through January 20.
The FFA members have blessed others throughout this year and look forward to continuing those blessings through 2012.
Serving those in need has also blessed the students as they have seen the joy that they have given to others. Community members have given their time and financial support to offer opportunities that the students would not otherwise have.

AWHS Softball Grad Helps University Win
Sarah Bores, a former Anthony Wayne High School softball standout, helped her Miami University club softball team win the National Collegiate Club Softball Association (NCSA) Great Lakes East Region Conference this past fall with a 13-2 record.
Because of this accomplishment, the team has received an automatic bid to play in the 2012 NCSA World Series in April. Her Miami team is currently ranked eighth out of 90 collegiate club teams in the nation.
Sarah also made Miami University’s fall semester provost’s honor roll (GPA requirement of 3.75 or higher).

Nick & Jimmy’s Marks First Year
In April, Nick & Jimmy’s opened its fifth location at Finzel and US 64 in Whitehouse.
Trying to get staff to understand the philosophies and workings of Nick & Jimmy’s does not come easy, and food and service were not always up to par. Nick & Jimmy’s restaurants are joints where friends meet and neighbors greet. It is a place to let your hair down, have fun, drink and eat good food with great service.
So, as we look to 2012 you can watch us accomplish our mission, which is “good food, good times and great service”!

Blessings Given, Received At Community Of Christ
2011 has been a wonderful year of transition and change at Community of Christ Lutheran Church. After Pastor Rich Ferne’s retirement, the pastoral call committee screened and interviewed candidates throughout the year. Pastor Matthew Lash will be installed as the new senior pastor on January 8.
The church sponsored community offerings such as Financial Peace University, Vacation Bible School (with Hope United Methodist and Zion United Methodist), a concert series and the Toledo Symphony’s fourth annual “Christmas in Whitehouse.”
The tradition of extending blessings from the congregation to the community continued in 2011. Donations of money, food and other goods were made to many organizations both locally and abroad.
The ladies’ craft group donated 320 articles of handmade clothing and blankets to Salem Lutheran Church, local hospitals, shelters and other organizations to help those in need.
The church collected 55 pints of blood for the American Red Cross, baked over 200 dozen cookies for Maumee United Methodist’s Kairos prison ministry and sponsored families in need at Christmastime.
Community of Christ plans to continue “Making Jesus Known” to the community in 2012.
