Middle, High School Youth Thank Area Veterans

Every high school and middle school student, each veteran and teacher, was hushed as they listened to Trace Adkins sing of proudly making it to Arlington National Cemetery for serving America.
Arms went up in the air as students Sarah Philipi, Sarah Buchanan and Kelly Tran sang God Bless the U.S.A.
And each veteran from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard stood above the crowd while the band played his or her service song.
The November 7 Veterans Day assembly brought students and local veterans together at Springfield High School, in preparation for the federal holiday on November 11.
“We will pause Friday to remember those who have underwritten our freedom with duty, honor and selfless service,” said JROTC Cadet Ted Zoodsma. Turning to the veterans in the audience, he thanked them for their unwavering support.
Representatives from the Holland American Legion Post 646, Korean War Veterans Post 131 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27 recalled the veterans lost during the past year.
Many more are serving, as was obvious when the audience was asked to stand if someone in their family has served or is currently serving. Many rose to their feet.
SHS graduate Bonnie Mason joined her parents Leona and Henry Bahler. Henry is a Korean War veteran, serving from September 1950 to September 1952 as a sergeant and communications chief in the U.S. Army.
The Bahlers have lived in the township for 50 years, and their granddaughter Monica, a senior, was also at the assembly.
“It makes their participation in this annual event even more meaningful,” Mason said of her parents.
The United States currently has soldiers in service in more than 100 countries, Cadet Azaree Whitehead said.
The commanding officer for the JROTC, Azaree explained that every cadet was involved in planning the event in some way – the agenda, video, music, promotions and sending invitations to veterans.
“This was all run by the students,” said Col. Jim Coomler, a retired Army officer and senior army instructor for JROTC. Springfield is the only Northwest Ohio school to have a JROTC program, which is now in its 27th year.
