Field Trips, Sports Training, Crafts All Part Of Free Summer Fun

It was 93 degrees out Monday, but inside the Maumee High School weight room, 13-year-old Parker Henry was breaking a sweat more from the workout than the temperature.
Maumee Parks and Recreation employee Brad LaClair was guiding Henry through the circuit of weights, as part of a free service offered to Maumee youth daily during the summer.
The high school’s weight room will be staffed with an instructor from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. daily for children as part of the summer program, said Dawn Miles, assistant recreation supervisor.
At the high school, instructors will also be on hand for baseball and softball batting practice, basketball, distance running, soccer and tennis, she said.
Logan Ankney, 12, was preparing for a baseball game by hitting tennis balls in the batting cage inside the football stadium Tuesday.
“I’ll be coming here a lot,” he said. Marcus Floyd, 10, and Zach Pelow, 11, were taking turns with Ankney as instructor Jeff Fifer set up the pitching machine.
“We’ll be up here every day,” Fifer said.
Fifer, Bridgett Kolbow, Anthony “Tig” Dybala and Sam Ziss are among the summer recreation instructors for the various sports.
The summer will wrap up with tennis tournaments and 5,000-meter race.
In addition to the sports, the popular youth theater program has begun at Gateway Middle School from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Each Maumee park has daily activities planned during those same hours at no cost.
Several field trips are planned throughout the summer, including:
• Tuesday, June 17, noon, Mud Hens game. Meet at the city parks by 10:00 a.m. for pickup. The cost is $6.00 per ticket. Bring a sack lunch.
• Wednesday, June 25, 10:00 a.m., Toledo Zoo. The cost is $6.00. Bring a sack lunch.

Historic House Hit by Tree During Monday Storms
Homeowners John and Maddy Daech were awaiting a visit from the insurance adjuster on Tuesday after a Monday evening thunderstorm damaged an 80-year-old maple tree on Pierce Street in Maumee. Although the tree hit their historic house, built in 1831, and a gazebo, no windows were broken and no one was hurt.
